This week was the most progress I have made in a week so far. After changing to a different Unreal Engine VR Template, I managed to recreate my door mechanism and allow the user to grab the door, when the door is grabbed it is pushed open. Obviously this isn't exactly how a door is interacted with but it is a step in the right direction. The Main issue is that the hands clip through the door when attempting to push the door open and so I began to look at the blueprints the template used in an attempt to add collision to the hands. This involved creating a custom collision preset for the hands and then using blueprints to turn on collision for the hand mesh whenever it comes into contact with the environment. When I tested this it works perfectly, the user can push the door as they would a real one and it opens in front of them depending on how far they push. Whilst this allows for the user to accurately push the door and allows them to pull it if they reach around the side of the door, the final important factor I want to add to the door is the ability to grab a handle and pull, If I could get this to work it would cover all the bases in which a user might interact with a door and allow for the flexibility to push and pull the door. Whilst I didn't manage to work on my lever like I said I would, I was very happy with my progress this week and feel that my door is finally nearing completion. Next week I would like the base version of my door to be finished, this means adding the ability to pull the handle as well as ensuring it can still be pushed, once this is done, I can continue work on my lever, which should use many of the same principles and my creation of my door should give me a head start on working on the lever.
